Featured Presentation:

Introduction to SQL Server 2012 Window Functions

Charlie Glover

In this presentation, Charlie presents an introduction to T-SQL window functions. These functions are often used to interpret, communicate and summarize meaningful data patterns in business reports displayed in tabular or graphical format. Since statistics and algebraic functions are cornerstones of data analytics, Window functions in SQL server 2012 are a great addition. Prior to this development, SQL Server 2005 was probably the first milestone in supporting window functions; it introduced window ranking functions (ROW_NUMBER, RANK, DENSE_RANK, and NTILE) with limited extended development in SQL Server 2008 R2. Microsoft SQL Server 2012 enhances support for window aggregate functions by introducing support for offset functions (LAG, LEAD, FIRST_VALUE, and LAST_VALUE), and support for window distribution functions (PERCENT_RANK, CUME_DIST, PERCENTILE_DISC, and PERCENTILE_CONT). The intended audience is for those who want an introductory presentation on the subject, but have some background in writing reports using TSQL or/and reporting tools such as SSRS, OBIEE, Crystal Reports, Tableau, Excel, R, SAS etc.
